Dear Marvin Community,
As new principal of Marvin, I look forward to the relationships and memories I will create with staff, parents and community members throughout the year. I feel fortunate to be at a school with dedicated staff, students, and parents and I am confident this year is going to be an incredible year for us all!
A little about me… I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. After graduating High School, I attended Fresno State for two years and then transferred to Cal State Fullerton where I earned a Bachelor's of Science in Child and Adolescent Development. I continued my education by obtaining a Masters in Curriculum Design with an emphasis on teaching English as a Second Language.
I began my career with San Diego Unified as a classroom teacher in 2002 at Birney Elementary. I continued my career as a classroom teacher at Cherokee Point Elementary and Rodriguez Elementary before becoming an English Learner Support Teacher (ELST) at the district level. I then took a position as Vice Principal of Ericson Elementary and in 2013 accepted a position as Principal of Fay Elementary where I worked alongside over 700 students and 75 educators and support staff.
This year, I will be doing a lot of listening and watching, as well as learning from the devoted staff and families at Marvin. My personal goal will be to provide leadership that facilitates a school environment which promotes instruction to meet the individual needs of our students. I am committed to spending time in classrooms and getting to know the students while supporting their learning.
It is my personal belief that a strong home-school connection is an essential component to a schools success and it will continue to be a priority at Marvin. Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all play an important role in encouraging children to become active learners. Your support and cooperation, combined with our best professional efforts, will ensure continued academic success for every child at Marvin.
Once again, I am thrilled about our partnership we will foster this year and look forward to the many challenges and joys that lie ahead. I know we will make a great team as we continue the Marvin tradition of students, parents, and staff working together to make each child the best that he or she can be!
Sincerely,
Mr. Tovar
